Mark Ulriksen

Mark Ulriksen

Mark Ulriksen is an artist and illustrator who has become widely known through his work for The New Yorker, where he has been a regular contributor of covers and illustrations since 1993 – (close to 200 illustrations and 48 magazine covers.) Mark has contributed to most of America’s leading magazines and newspapers over the years, winning many awards, including two Gold and three Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators. Some of his work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress.

His 2006 parody of Brokeback Mountain for The New Yorker, was named the year’s top magazine news cover by the Magazine Publishers of America. Mark is also a music fanatic and the regular illustrator of the San Francisco Jazz Festival. His dog prints adorn many Kaiser Permanente Hospitals throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

A third generation San Franciscan born in 1957, Mark grew up in San Carlos. After studying at California State University Chico, and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, he began his career with 13 years as a graphic designer and art director – including 8 years as Art Director of KQED’s San Francisco Focus magazine. Today, he divides his time between private commissions, books, gallery exhibitions and illustration assignments.

His Wikipedia entry describes his style as, “Expressionistic, quirky, angular, and painterly, with exaggerated features (usually very small hands and feet), but which captures the essence of his subjects dead-on with sweetness, light, humor, and joy.” Someone else called his style, “Gracefully awkward.” He agrees. Mark lives with his wife, photographer Leslie Flores, and their two children in San Francisco.
