By referencing romanticism and symbolism, I try to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subject associations and formal parallels. These incite the viewer to make new personal associations.”

Krista Marlene 1

Krista's work is influenced by fashion, textile design, music, and by the layers which appear within memories, emotions and dreams.  She seeks out textures, patterns, subtle tones and shapes, all of which are embodied within her work as it merges through a collage of photography and painting.  By referencing romanticism and symbolism, Marlene tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels.  These incite the viewer to make new personal associations.

Her mixed media artworks isolate the movements of humans and/or objects. By doing so, new sequences are created which reveal an inseparable relationship between motion and sound. With a conceptual approach, she tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations. This creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.

Her works doesn’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By contesting the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, she creates work in which a fascination with the clarity of content and an uncompromising attitude towards conceptual and minimal art can be found.

Krista Marlene currently lives and works in Los Angeles as an artist and commercial photographer.
